In our story Mozambique, South Africa and the Netherlands come together with Ingrid de Souza (South African) and Elsard de Boer (Dutch). Ingrid sailed over the world as an amazing chef with a passion for food. As a dive instructor she knew Mozambique. Elsard has over 50+ years of passion for trees and made study trips to plantations in South America. He was chairman of reNature Foundation until the end of 2020. Their interest in Mozambique goes back to the nineties, when deforestation was already going on.

Between 2006 and 2009 the press was interested in Mozambique, because the Dutch Royal Family was building a luxury villa there. The Dutch society and press put pressure on the government to sell the villa because of the poverty and so they did. This was not a solution for poverty and deforestation. The country is so rich on many other levels that this is a contradiction and that means, there is a solution! Three quarters of the thirthy million people in Mozambique live from basic agriculture and cut down trees for firewood. An answer for a solution should be somewhere in between those two subjects.

In 2016 Syntropic Farming came on their path and they made contact with an educational institute in Mozambique to see how they could implement syntropic techniques. The couple started in southern Mozambique on very sandy soil. With knowledge from the local community and knowledge of Ernst Gotsch and their experience in the Netherlands of growing foodforests, they have the right cards to make this project a succes.

Due to the remoteness of the region, they were forced to build most of the things from scratch. It is impossible to do this without foreign capital.
